Shooting Into The Sun

Traditionally, shooting into the sun was just wrong, resulting in blown out backgrounds and dark shadowy faces. Does that mean you can’t shoot into the sun? No, capturing a lens flare or spotting may be the emotion the shot needs and you may have to shoot into the sun to get it. Is it risky? Yeah, focusing is difficult and you will have to get up close and personal to get the shot right. Practice makes perfect!

The easiest way to practice shot composition is sunrise and sunset photos. You can experiment with offsetting the sun so it is not dead center in your shot. I like to use the rule of thirds here and let the sun take over the left or right of the frame, opening up the rest of the frame for the sky, water and background. Whatever you do, experiment!
